Lightweight, Corrosion-Resistant Materials

Light gauge steel construction replaces wood framing with thin steel sections galvanized to protect from corrosion in marine or other environments. Sections are sized to correspond to common wood sizes such as 2" x 4" and 2" x 6". Steel construction follows the platform frame system of house building. Connections are made with self-tapping, self-drilling screws.

Pre-punched sections allow wires and plumbing to easily pass through and reduce construction time. This form of construction is used for non-structural framing such as interior partitions. But it should be protected with fire-rated sheeting as it loses its strength in fire quite easily. Contact Jimmy Blackwell Framing LLC for your next construction project.

Advantages of Light Gauge Steel

Light gauge steel structures have many of the advantages of light wood-framed structures. To begin with, they are light and allows quick building without heavy tools or equipment. Light gauge steel structures can be easily carried by the hand and can be shaped to any form. The main assembly tool is a light, handheld screw gun. Since steel is strong, LGS structures are lighter than wood-framed structures of equivalent strength and thus allows greater spacing between studs compared to wood which is about 24'' (600 mm) for LGS vs. about 16'' or 20'' (400 or 500 mm) for wood.

The light gauge steel can be clad and insulated with a wide range of materials that are easy to change or modify at any point in its lifespan. There is a range of systems and products catering to this type of construction. In addition to that, light gauge steel structures are non-combustible, which is a code requirement for certain structures. These steel structures do not rot, shrink, warp, or decompose like wood structures, and are resistant to termites.
